Measuring guide | Curtains
A step-by-step Kluxe guide to ensure your made-to-measure curtains fit perfectly.
Step 1
Measuring the width
For a pole: Measure the pole width, excluding the decorative finials at each end.
For a track: Measure the total width from end to end.
For our made-to-measure curtains service, this is all the information we need, as we handle all necessary allowances. If you would like your curtains to return neatly to the wall, please contact us for guidance.
Tips if making your own curtains:
Add 6–8 cm per curtain for a comfortable overlap where the curtains meet at the center.
For returns to the wall, measure the distance from the rings or gliders back to the wall on each side, and add these dimensions to the total width.
For single curtains, note the width and whether it will hang on the right or left.
Important: If your curtains are planned to return to the wall, the curtain top must be slightly lower than the bottom of the pole to avoid obstruction.
For fitting outside the window reveal
The finished length is the distance from the very top of your curtain to the bottom hem. Always measure at three points—left, right, and center of your pole or track—and choose the measurement that best suits your space.
Tab Top Headings
Measure from the top of the pole to your desired bottom hem—this is the drop.
Add the diameter of the pole to this drop to account for the portion of the curtain lost when threading the tabs onto the pole. This gives your finished length.
Eyelet Headings
Measure from the top of the pole to the desired bottom hem—this is the eyelet drop.
Add 3.5 cm (1.38”) for the fabric above the eyelet, giving your finished length.
Gathered and Pencil Pleat Headings
The top of our gathered curtains sits 3.5 cm (1.38”) above the hook.
Measure from the ring or glider eyes to the desired bottom hem—this is the hook drop.
Add 3.5 cm (1.38”) to determine the finished length.
All Other Headings
Decide where you want the top of the curtain to finish.
For tracks: Align with the top of the track.
For poles: Align with the top, center, or bottom of the pole, depending on your style.
Measure from this top position to the bottom hem. This measurement is your finished length.
Not Yet Fixed a Pole or Track?
We recommend having your pole or track in place before measuring, but if that’s not possible, follow these steps:
Step 1 – Choose Your Pole or Track
Decide on the type of pole or track you plan to use. This will guide your measurements and style choices.
Step 2 – Decide the Positioning
For a standard window without architraves:
The pole or track should overhang the window by at least 15 cm (6″) on each side.
The bottom of the pole or track should typically sit no less than 8 cm (3″) above the top of the window soffit.
Step 3 – Measure as Usual
Once you have your pole or track type and position in mind, follow the same process outlined in Steps 1 and 2 of our Measuring Guide. For accuracy, make small pencil marks to check you’re happy with both the top and hem positions.
