How to choose a window treatment

The ideal window treatment should complement the purpose of your room while enhancing its style.

Consider your interior scheme

When selecting curtains or blinds, keep your interior design in mind:

  • Match the style and period of your home.

  • Consider existing colours, patterns, and textures, ensuring your choice complements both current and future decor.

  • Take the scale of your space into account, particularly with bold patterns or large fabrics.

  • Fabrics impact mood: shiny, reflective textures create light and luxury, while soft, matte finishes add depth and warmth.

Period Windows

Georgian Windows
Classic Georgian windows feature splayed reveals with wooden panels below and an architrave all around. Pinch pleat curtains complement their elegance beautifully. Typically, pole brackets are fixed to the top corners of the architrave so curtains cover the window perfectly without obscuring the architectural detail.

Victorian Windows
The scale and solidity of Victorian windows call for equally substantial fabrics and treatments. Heavy curtains with generous fullness, complemented by deep pelmets, balance the proportions of large, impressive windows.

Large Windows

Large windows provide an opportunity to make a statement. Use sumptuous fabrics and generous curtain fullness to create impact.

  • Wide windows can be balanced with longer curtain lengths and minimal overhang on each side.

  • Tall, narrow windows benefit from mounting the pole or track near the top of the window and allowing a generous side overhang to improve proportions.

Small Windows

Smaller windows need lighter treatments to avoid overpowering the space.

  • Roman blinds are a contemporary, simple solution, either inside or outside the reveal.

  • Curtains to the sill within a deep reveal work well for a more traditional look.

  • Narrow windows appear larger when curtains extend beyond the reveal.

  • Short windows can be enhanced by fitting a Roman blind high above the window to add height.

  • Attic dormer windows work well with traditional dormer rods, generally suited for reveals up to 1 metre wide.

Bay Windows

Bay windows can be challenging:

  • Curtains can be fixed straight across, though this closes off the bay when drawn.

  • Bent tracks can follow the bay’s curve, or blinds can be fitted individually within each section—especially useful when there are window seats.

  • Careful measuring is essential to allow clearance between blinds in each section.
